A mother’s instinct to protect her child can make her do the most extraordinary things.
Just like the story of this young Oklahoman mom, Sarah McKinley, who did not hesitate to shoot an intruder who tried to break into their home one New Year’s Eve. According to Little Things.com, Sarah was home alone with her three-month-old son, after her husband passed away from cancer the week before. Keeping her composure and thinking quickly, she barricaded the front door with a couch and called 911 for help. This was probably a life and death situation for Sarah, as she held onto two guns, and asked the operator if she could shoot the intruder if he got inside.
“I’ve got two guns in my hand. Is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door? I’m here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?” Sarah asked the 911 operator.
“Well, you have to do whatever you can do to protect yourself. I can’t tell you that you can do that, but you do what you have to do to protect your baby.” This was what dispatcher Diane Graham, the operator who received the disheartening call, told then 18-year-old Sarah.
And as 24-year-old intruder Justin Shane Martin made his way inside with a hunting knife, Sarah shot and killed him with a 12-gauge shotgun, while the second intruder, Dustin Louis Stewart, 29, turned himself in. Sarah was not charged since she acted in self-defense.
