Presidential sister Kris Aquino is once again at the center of controversy after sharing a picture of her sunburnt skin on Instagram on Thursday, November 19.
In her controversial post, the famous TV personality said she is already “quits” with commuters inconvenienced by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in several venues in Metro Manila because she got sunburnt because of her APEC activities. According to Aquino, her post-APEC sunburn is her “karma ng kaartehan” which she got after touring the spouses of APEC leaders at Fort Santiago in Manila on Thursday, November 19.

Aquino’s Instagram post earned the ire of many particularly those directly affected by the heavy road traffic brought about by road closures to make way for the APEC meet. After being tagged by netizens as insensitive, Aquino issued an apology for her post on her Instagram account on Saturday, November 21.

Here are some comments left by netizens.
“How is that patas (even)?! She had the choice to use SPF, the commuters didn’t have a choice about the traffic and walking to work. Such a privileged life she has that a minor inconvenience is equated with the suffering of many. #FirstWorldProblemsInAThirdWorldCountry”, one netizen commented on The Soshal Network.
“Paano naging kwits madam??? Hindi naman kami umarte sa initan gaya mo. Pumasok kami sa mga opisina dahil kailangan namin ng pera. Oo choice namin pumasok, choice mo din yan, wag mong icompare ang sunburn mo sa hirap ng mga commuters. I love you, but this post is too insensitive,” user oishishi remarked.
(How are we even? We weren’t in the same situation. We went to work because we need money. Yes, it was our choice to go to work and it was also your choice so don’t compare your sunburn to the difficulties of commuters. I love you, but this post is too insensitive.)
Meanwhile, Cyril Balungcas defended Aquino stating that everyone needed to sacrifice for APEC.
He commented, “Each and every Filipino was called to do a sacrifice for APEC, Kris has her role as a presidential sister, others had to endure traffic and had to walk long distances. We think being sunburned is nothing compared to the pagod and abala we had to go through, but I have to say that we can’t all be Kris and she can’t be us. We can all contribute something for this country but that something can never be the same for all of us.”
On Monday, November 16, thousands of commuters were forced to walk for several hours under the excruciating heat of the sun just to go to work. Due to the closure of Roxas Boulevard in Manila, commuters from Cavite endured walking several kilometers along Coastal road.
