LOOK: Chandelier made entirely of human bones

Located inside the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic, this chandelier is no doubt the most bizarre and the creepiest in the world.

Made entirely of human bones, the one-of-a-kind chandelier, which serves as the chilling centrepiece of the room, has seven “arms” topped with skulls.

In the 16th century, a half-blind monk was tasked to collect the bones of more than 40,000 victims of the Black Plague and war. The bones were then buried in the below-ground chapel in the town of Kutna Hora.

Not content with the monk’s arrangement of the bones, the aristocratic Schwarzenbergs, a Bohemian royal family, then hired a local woodcarver named František Rint to create unusual animal sculptures from the bones.

Dubbed as a pièce de résistance, the chandelier reportedly contains every bone in the human body.

According to stories, the half-blind monk spent his entire life digging out corpses and preparing bones for display. The monk had to wait  years until worms removed all the flesh from the bones. He then cleaned and polished the bones before arranging them into great pyramids.

With 40,000 skeletons inside the gothic chapel decorated with bone crosses, bone heraldry, and bones of other animals, Sedlec Ossuary was dubbed by the New York Times as “the world’s greatest single work of memento mori art.”

Every year, around 200,000 tourists visit the Sedlec Ossuary.
