A 27-year-old factory worker in Thailand may face up to 37 years in prison after insulting the King’s dog on Facebook.
Accused of violating the lese majeste law as well as sedition and computer crimes, Thanakorn Siripaiboon reportedly “liked” a Facebook page which aimed to insult King Bhumibol Adulyade’s pet dog named Tongdaeng, which means copper. Moreover, Siripaiboon is also accused of posting an insulting photo of the dog.
The acts committed by Siripaiboon are an apparent violation of Thailand’s notoriously strict laws protecting the monarchy from threats and insults.
“This is absurd, in every sense. They can’t press charges against people who just click like on a post to express their agreement,” says Siripaiboon’s lawyer Anon Numpa.
“This is just a means for the military to stop us from digging up on their corruption,” Numpa added.
A beloved dog in Thailand, Tongdaeng is the subject of the book written by King Bhumibol in 2002. The animated movie Tongdaeng: The Inspirations, the number two film at Thai box office early this month, was inspired by the book.
