Who would have thought that an elastic hair tie could lead to a life-threatening infection?
Audree Kopp, a woman from Lexington, Kentucky had to learn this the hard way.
In case of fashion emergencies, Audree, like most girls, kept a hair tie wrapped around her wrist. However, this simple action led to a spine-tingling medical problem.
Unknown to Kopp, the hair accessory caused an almost invisible scratch on her skin, allowing the bacteria present on the glittery band to penetrate her skin, pores, and hair follicles. After a few days, Kopp noticed a growing bump on her wrist.
Kopp immediately went to a family doctor to have the bump checked. Unfortunately, the doctor thought it was nothing serious and just gave her antibiotics.
However, the bump became red and continued to grow so Kopp eventually ended up undergoing going a surgery.
Speaking to WLKY News, Kopp said, “They said I needed surgery and thank God I caught it in time or I could have had sepsis.”
Doctors revealed that the bacteria from her hair tie caused three types of infection. Fortunately, Kopp escaped blood poisoning or sepsis.
Carrying hair ties around your wrist can cause a number of skin problems and serious infection, according to Dr. Amit Gupta, one of Kopp’s doctors. It is best not to wear hair tie around the wrist for long periods of time. Also, the hair tie should be washed to prevent it from accumulating bacteria.
