Chinese passenger tries to commit suicide in mid-flight

Last December 28, a routine domestic flight in China was disrupted when one of the passengers tried to kill himself inside the airplane’s lavatory.

The XiamenAir flight had taken off in Haikou, Hainan province and was on its way to Xiamen, Fujian Province. Around 45 minutes into the flight, attendants suddenly heard loud banging sounds coming from the toilet. They tried knocking on the door, but when they didn’t get a response from the occupant, the cabin crew had to open the door with a key.

Inside, they found a man repeatedly banging his head against the wash basin, blood flowing profusely from the wounds. Flight attendants were eventually able to calm him down and bandage his wounds. Though he lost a lot of blood, the man reportedly did not suffer any serious injuries.

Two other men traveling with the stricken man said that the suicidal passenger had been suffering from depression.
