Despite leading the latest BS-SWS (Business World-Social Weather Station) survey on the top presidentiables for the May elections, it seems that Vice President Jejomar Binay’s charms are not enough to impress Cebuanos.
The VP was supposed to make a speech before the 10,000 or so people gathered inside the Cebu City Sports Center in Cebu, Central Philippines on Sunday, January 17, 2016, but he was met with loud jeers and boos even while he was being introduced by suspended Mayor Mike Rama during the formal opening of the Sinulog festivities.
Binay was not able to talk much since the loud boos continued as he stood up to make a speech; thus, he had to cut short whatever speech he had prepared and said, “Maayong buntag sa inyong tanan (Good morning everyone). Viva Pit Senyor!” the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
He was with running mate Sen. Gringo Honasan and several senatorial candidates under the United Nationalist Alliance, including Alma Moreno and Princess Kiram, as well as his son, suspended Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay. The rest of his party did not attempt to make a speech in light of what happened to Binay.
The group went to the media center for breakfast before returning to the VIP section of the stadium to watch the festivities, but no one attempted to make a speech after the “rousing” welcome.
The group was able to enjoy the Sinulog festival which had 49 floats, at least 32 dancing contingents, and several puppeteers and higantes (giants) as the parade started and ended at the grandstand where they were watching.
