This sitting position could endanger your child’s health

Although it may seem harmless, sitting with legs in the shape of the letter W can lead to orthopedic problems in  the future.

Many children assume this sitting position while playing for several hours as it allows them to manipulate toys easily in an upright sitting position with low chances of losing their balance. Moreover, it is considered a comfortable position for them.

W-sitting is discouraged since it does not allow trunk rotation and lateral weight shifts over one side. These are necessary for the child to maintain balance while playing outside, writing, or doing table top activities.

This sitting position can also predispose a child to hip dislocation particularly if the child has a history of hip dysplasia. It can also discourage a child from developing a hand preference.

Neurologic concerns and developmental delays are also associated with this sitting position especially if the child has increased muscle tone.

W-sitting will worsen muscle tightness since the position places hip adductors, hamstrings, internal rotators, and heel cords in an extremely shortened range.

Encourage your child to try other sitting positions and prevent them from making the w position a habit. If the child has difficulty in sitting independently in any position other than a W, immediately consult a therapist for assistance.
