A rape victim identified as Anastazcia Gutierrez was shamed by several netizens after she shared her story on the ABS-CBN TV program Red Alert.
In her interview with journalist Atom Araullo, Gutierrez recounted her harrowing experience which happened seven years ago. According to the victim, she was on a date with her perpetrator when she started feeling dizzy after having too much to drink. This made her decide to go home being accompanied by her date. Unfortunately, this gave her perpetrator a chance to take advantage and sexually assault her.
The video of her interview received negative comments shortly after it was uploaded on YouTube on February 3. Several netizens pointed out that Gutierrez was to blame in the incident since she allowed her perpetrator to come home with her despite her drunken state.
Through a Facebook post, Gutierrez addressed the comments directed towards her.
“Hindi dahil nakipag-date at nakipag–inuman ako at sinama ko siya sa bahay ko (dahil nagpumilit siya!) ay ibig–sabihin na ginusto kong ma-rape—na dapat in-expect ko na ‘yon,” she wrote.
[Just because I had a few drinks with my date and brought him home with me (because he insisted), that does not mean that I wanted to be raped, that I should expect it. ]
“A lot of victims refuse to talk to anyone about being raped primarily because of the fear of victim-shaming. Sometimes it’s their own relatives that even tell them to never speak of their experience ever again. It’s so heart-breaking. Let’s educate the ignorant. Let’s have this conversation no matter how difficult it is. We need to help other girls and women who have been abused so they can set themselves free from their pain. You will never know how much guilt and suffering victim-shaming can inflict on a person until you go through what we’ve gone through,” she added.
