In the Philippines, women are no strangers to sexual perverts, particularly in public areas such as streets and malls.
Mary Nicole De Guzman, a student from UP Manila, recently shared her personal story of harassment on Facebook. The unfortunate incident occurred at the second level of Robinson’s Place Manila on Monday, February 1, while she was waiting for someone to fetch her.
De Guzman, who was alone at that moment, saw a man staring at her in several instances. Since she was used to getting catcalled, De Guzman gave the man an angry glare. She then decided to go inside some shops to avoid the man.
Apparently, De Guzman’s actions didn’t deter the man. When De Guzman was about to go inside another store, the man briefly walked past her and touched her behind.
Mixed emotions engulfed De Guzman at that moment, but she only managed to blurt out, “Ang kapal ng mukha mo ah!”
(You are thick-skinned!)
Thinking that the man had already disappeared, De Guzman was shocked to see that the man was still following her a minute later. Consequently, De Guzman took out her phone and shouted “ang kapal rin ng mukha mong sundan pako ah!” (you are thick-skinned to even follow me). She then approached the man and took photos of him.
The man then started hiding his face and tried to escape his victim who opted to fight back. Luckily, De Guzman was able to follow him and capture several photos of him.
In front of several witnesses, De Guzman shouted, “Pasensya na po, pinpipicturan ko lang yung lalakeng binastos ako.”
(My apologies as I’m taking pictures of the man who harassed me.)
De Guzman will be using the photos she took to have the man barred from entering Robinson’s Place Manila. She will also have the incident recorded in the police blotter.
Furthermore, the victim believes that she was able to get even with her assailant with what she did.
“Mahuli man siya o hindi, it brings me joy na nakaganti ako kahit papano. Nung hinabol ko siya to take a pic of him, fear and panic was written all over his face, just like mine when he ‘touched’ me.”
( I know I was able to get even whether he will be captured or not. When I followed him to take his picture, fear and panic was written all over his face, just like mine when he “touched” me.)
