MANILA, Philippines. In its latest travel advisory, the government of the United Kingdom has warned its citizens about traveling to the Philippines.
According to its advisory, an increase in political violence is traditionally observed in the country during campaign periods. It noted that the country’s national elections will be on May 9, 2016.
Furthermore, the UK discouraged its citizens from taking part in political rallies as they could be arrested or deported for participating in such events.
“You should avoid large crowds and demonstrations and follow the advice of the local authorities. The Philippine Bureau of Immigration has warned foreigners not to participate in political rallies. Any foreign nationals taking part in these events could be subject to arrest and/or deportation.”
Due to ongoing terrorist activities and encounters between the military and insurgent groups, the UK also advised citizens not to travel to southwest Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. It added that there is a high threat from terrorism such as kidnapping in tourist locations like Siquijor, southern Palawan and southern Negros.
Due to the rise of cases of dengue in the Philippines this year, the UK advised its citizens to take necessary measures to avoid mosquito bites.
Lastly, it reminded citizens that around 20 typhoons hit the country annually so there may be flooding and landslides.
“You should monitor the progress of approaching storms and follow the advice of the local authorities, including any evacuation orders,” it said.
