Jose Maria “Joma” Sison, founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and chief political consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), sees the possibility of a ceasefire if Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte becomes the next president of the Philippines.
He will also consider returning home to the Philippines after being exiled in The Netherlands since 1987 if Duterte wins in the May 9 polls. Although he dismissed speculations that he is endorsing the tough-talking mayor, Sison said that he has previously talked with Duterte following the release of the cops from NBA rebels.
In his interview with ABS-CBN News, Sison said, “We talked about the need to resume the peace negotiations and release the political prisoners unjustly imprisoned by the Arroyo and Aquino charged in violation of the Hernandez political offense doctrine and the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees.
“The mayor said that if he wins, we would meet as soon as possible abroad and then in the Philippines,” Sison added.
According to Sison, he and Duterte agreed to a potential ceasefire even while reforms in several aspects are still in the works. He even considers the possibility of witnessing the oath-taking of Duterte in June if he wins the presidency.
Sison was Duterte’s professor in Political Thought at the Lyceum of the Philippines before the declaration of Martial Law in 1972.
