Weeks after the Commission on Election (COMELEC) website was hacked, the stolen data on over 55 million voters has apparently been posted online. What is worse is that the government itself appears to be one of the “seeders” of the illegal torrent.
A “torrent” is defined as a computer file containing data to be distributed online via the BitTorrent file distribution system. The BitTorrent protocol decentralizes distribution of the file from its main source (distributor) by providing multiple sources of download points once files have been downloaded 100% by its clients (which are average online users). Once clients have downloaded the full file from other peer sources, the torrent client program will automatically start “seeding” the downloaded file when left alone. Seeding means to upload a torrent to other users who do not have the full file yet.
The entire COMELEC database of compromised accounts was initially compressed at 90 GB which when extracted yields a 330 GB file according to InterAksyon technical sources. It came to the attention of some netizens that one of the many “seeders” has the tracking address of mail.malacanang.gov.ph, a Malacañang Palace mail server address.
Malacañang has yet to release an official statement in response to this latest issue circulating online.
