In 2003, Trillanes, together with the Magdalo group, lead the Oakwood mutiny to stand up against former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s corrupt and oppressive regime. He was imprisoned for 7 1/2 years.

Trillanes is close to the famous Regal films producer Lily Monteverde. Monteverde would always visit him while he was imprisoned and even once said that she was willing to take him under her wing as one of the “Regal babies.”Miriam Defensor-Santiago even once said that Trillanes is the youngest and most handsome senator.
