Universal Robina Corp. (URC), the food manufacturing company behind the popular C2 green tea drink, claims that all its products in the Philippines are safe despite a recall order for two of its beverage drinks in Vietnam last month.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Health has ordered the recall of a batch of C2 green apple manufactured on February 4, 2016 and a batch of Rong-Do energy drink manufactured on November 10, 2015. According to the ministry’s chief inspector Nguyen Van Nhien, tests showed higher than permitted levels of lead content in the said drinks.
While the particular batch of C2 green tea had a lead content of 0.085 milligrams per liter, a batch of Rong Do energy drink contained a lead content of 0.053 mg/l. The allowable lead content for both products is 0.05 mg/l.
Vietnamese authorities imposed a fine of about P12 million after finding that the Philippine food company violated food safety regulations in the country.
In an emailed statement, URC senior vice president for Corporate Affairs Renato Salud assured Filipino consumers that all its products in the country are safe.
“In the Philippines, all URC products remain fully compliant with food standards,” he said.
“We shall be reaching out proactively to our customers and partners to assure them of this fact as well as answer questions they may have regarding the development in Vietnam,” he added.
