The body of the two-year-old boy dragged by an alligator into a lagoon in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida has been recovered after a 16-hour search of the man-made lake.
The victim identified as Lane Graves was grabbed by the reptile, believed to be between 1.2 and 2 meters long, while he was playing near the water at the Seven Seas lagoon on Tuesday night. Despite his parents Matt and Melissa’s efforts to save their son, the alligator overpowered them and was able to snatch their son away.
In a news conference on Wednesday, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the boy’s body was intact and had only a few puncture wounds. Authorities believe that the boy likely drowned.
The family from Elkhorn, Nebraska was on vacation at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa near the Magic Kingdom park when the tragedy happened.
A Forensics team will try to check whether one of the five alligators already caught from the lake is the one responsible for the death of the boy. The search for alligators in the lake will continue if the alligator involved is not caught.
Meanwhile, Demings explained that what happened to the boy was “certainly not survivable” given that he was submerged for a long period of time.
On the sheriff’s department’s Twitter page, the family thanked those who helped them recover the body of Lane.
“The Graves family appreciates the support they have received and have asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their son.”
