Usually, when a student in class is able to answer the teacher’s questions or pass the exams, he/she receives acknowledgement and praises from others.
However, apart from the good things most people say, there are a few who seems like they hate the idea of other people overshadowing them.
A Facebook user named Paula Coleen Alcasid shared her thoughts about one of the issues rarely talked about: smart-shaming.
Smart-shaming is the act of shaming/mocking people who are smarter than the rest. The topic may not be discussed as often, but it happens a lot, especially in schools.
Read Alcasid’s meaningful post below:
“These are just some of the many smart-shaming lines that we frequently encounter on and off the web. Why do we rebut valid and meaningful arguments with such empty responses? Why do we resent intellectuals and mock critical thought?
Smart-shaming is the act of mocking someone who is smarter than others.
Indeed, in the age of information, anti-intellectualism has become a growing disease. Not only are we discouraging the pursuit of knowledge but we are also valuing ignorance.
Stop smart shaming. Train your brain by engaging in intellectual discourse.”
Netizens who had read the post agreed, which gives an assumption that there are a lot of people who tends to smart-shame a person who knows more than they do.
At the end of the day, smart-shaming should never be practiced especially when a person only intends to share his/her knowledge to everyone.
Bragging is different from sharing.
