Upon this new project that the company is opening, questions about the future of GMA Films are starting to rise.
GMA Films has produced films since 1994 and the last solely produced movie was dated back in 2012. The company has made successful romance movies like Let The Love Begin (2005) and Mulawin: The Movie (2005) starring Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, Moments of Love (2006) starring Dingdong Dantes and Iza Calzado. There was also a horror movie Ouija (2007) starring Jolina Magdangal, Iza Calzado, Rhian Ramos and Judy Ann Santos.
The production company produced psychological horror crime drama film The Road (2011) starring Carmina Villaroel, Marvin Agustin, Rhian Ramos, Barbie Forteza and TJ Trinidad. The film was shown in theaters around Belgium, North America, and Singapore.
Their most recent venture was Imagine You and Me (2016) starring popular love team Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards. The movie earned P120 Million in the box office.
They have also produced not-so-successful movies such as Boy Pick-Up: The Movie (2012) starring Ogie Alcasid, My Kontrabida Girl (2012) starring Rhian Ramos and Aljur Abrenica, Patient X (2009) starring Richard Gutierrez and Cristine Reyes, Batanes: Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan (2007) starring Iza Calzado and Taiwanese actor Ken Chu of Meteor Garden.
When asked about GMA Films’ future plans, GMA First Vice President for Program Management Joey Abacan answered “If you speak to the people who handled GMA Films before, kasi there was a time also that the film industry was also in a slump. Siyempre, as business people also, you have to be checking, what’s the climate right now.”
Though he stated that the one that really handles GMA Films and its future moves is the GMA Films President Annette Gozon.
