- ABS-CBN News anchor Karen Davila gets hate for grilling Manny Pacquiao
- Senator Manny Pacquiao appealed to netizens to stop bashing Karen Davila
- Sen. Manny Pacquiao on Friday came to the defense of broadcast journalist Karen Davila who received flak online for their televised interview which has since gone viral
Senator Manny Pacquiao defended broadcast journalist Karen Davila after she drew criticisms online when her televised interview went viral over her “unprofessional” line of questioning.
Pacquiao said in a statement, “I was never offended by her manner of questioning. Isa po siyang batikan sa larangan ng broadcasting at trabaho po niya na magbigay ng mabibigat na tanong sa taong kanyang ini-interview.”
Davila in ANC’s Headstart sought Pacquiao’s opinion on proposals to require senators and presidents to be college graduates. The athlete-turned-legislator said he supports this. And then she proceeded to ask the senator, “Pero kung ganun, baka hindi ka na mag-qualify.”
“Hindi, nag-aaral naman ako,” replied Pacquiao.
She then pressed Pacquiao to reveal where he was studying but the senator refused to give details.
“So secret ito,” Davila replied. “Pero kumbaga, naghahanda ka sa ganung paraan.”
“Naghahanda naman ako. Ako kasi yung tao na hindi kailangang pagsabihan kundi ginagawa ko yung kailangan kong gawin. Like boxing, boxer ako, champion, but actually hindi lang boxing ang sport ko, basketball, volleyball, chess, billiards. Kumbaga, nilalaro ko lahat,” Pacquiao said.
Davila was criticized later by several netizens for being “rude.” But the pugilist-turned-lawmaker called for the public to “stop the hate” and work instead.
Thank you Sen @mannypacquiao for setting the record straight 🙏🏻 I’ve been asked, “bakit mo tinanong kasi si Manny about his college degree?”. To put in context – Manny was invited to the show as the campaign manager of PDP Laban, a party that supports Federalism. (Cont) pic.twitter.com/ISu6QjIlx2

(Cont 2) Under the Federal Draft charter is a proposal requiring college degrees for senators & higher office. I asked Manny if he agrees w proposal & was surprised he said, “yes, I agree”. So i asked why… and he revealed that “nag-aaral ako at tinatapos ang college degree ko” pic.twitter.com/oRjtQiqLik

(Cont 3) I have worked in Habitat Phils with Manny. He has been on Headstart 4x & even had a 2 hour breakfast w him after the show. We discussed the university where he is getting his degree among other things. This is why I am grateful Manny set the record straight #ANCHeadstart pic.twitter.com/jtSwDSgTMu

(cont 4) Tanong nyo… Do I agree w the college degree requirement for higher office? Tulad ni former CJ Hilario Davide… NO.

In his statement, Pacquiao said in both his term as a Sarangani representative and now as senator, that he has expressed the desire to continue to learn in life. “With God’s wisdom, I am pursuing formal education because it is important to gain deeper knowledge and better understanding on what is happening around us,” he added.
