An interior designer from Sheffield, South Yorkshire drinks aged urine on a daily basis, due to its alleged ‘health benefits’ that he read online three years ago.
Fabian Farquharson, 37, revealed that he feels happier and smarter after he started drinking more than a pint of his own urine every morning, and claims it tastes like bitter ale.
He first started this odd practice three years ago, when he experienced stomach pains. The doctors and medical scan results couldn’t figure out what his health issue was, so he started researching alternative medicines and holistic therapies in 2013.
“I was traveling a lot for work and eating junk food – Burger King, McDonald’s, anything convenient… I was getting a lot of pain in my stomach and scans couldn’t find an ulcer or anything that could explain it, so I started looking online more and more,” he disclosed.
From there, he discovered the purported healing properties of urine.
“I’d been researching alternative medicines when I read about drinking aged urine. I’ve always been open-minded about that sort of thing, so I decided to give it a go and drink it fresh. It tasted a bit like bitter ale initially, it was quite strong but not a terrible taste and I had no problem finishing the glass. It was about half an hour later that I started to feel amazing, I was absolutely bursting with energy. Now I’d never go a day without it and would recommend it to anyone,” told Farquharson to 9GAG.

“I’ve always been quite into holistic health but that was when I started to adopt it into my life more, starting with my diet.” Farquharson adopted a ‘fruitarian’ diet before he began drinking his aged pee—eating raw fruits almost exclusively. He explained: “I started to eliminate ‘normal’ foods and ate only fruit. I’ll use mangoes, pineapple, strawberries – any fruit really, and add in chia seeds, flax seeds and hemp powder to make a smoothie… I quickly started to feel amazing. I had more energy than I had in years, and could feel my well-being improving.”
In 2015, Farquharson decided to start drinking his urine. His friends and family “weren’t that surprised” as he has always been a bit “off the wall” in his approach to health.
He said, starting to feel the effects about 30 minutes after his first drink: “I had a spring in my step and felt so energized – I went home that day and cleaned my whole house… As I continued, I noticed an increase in my mental capacity. I felt smarter somehow, able to concentrate more and my overall well-being was better in general.”

He then began to age his urine, leaving it up to a month and storing it in mason jars—or until it reaches the desired PH level of nine.
According to Farquharson, by ageing the urine, it goes through a “magnification process” and any alleged benefits will be more potent.
It is known that urine contains waste products that have been filtered out from one’s bloodstream. And drinking it reintroduces concentrated waste products into one’s body and forces the kidneys to filter them once more which may cause unnecessary strain.
Although urine therapy is said to date back to biblical times with historical documents suggesting that the Aztecs disinfected wounds with it, and some health benefits were also mentioned in Indian and Chinese literature, its health benefits remain dubious for the most part.
General Physician Dr. Rob Hicks told the Mail, “Over the years many people have claimed health benefits from drinking their own urine, but as far as I’m aware there is no scientific evidence to back-up these claims… The kidneys are an efficient filtering system getting rid of what the body doesn’t need, so to put this back into the body seems counter-productive… Personally, I believe there are better—and more palatable—ways to keep the body healthy including not smoking, eating a healthy diet, and keeping stress under control.”
