- Patrick Stewart is not gay but supports the LGBTQ Community
- Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart have kissed each other before
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen have been friends for a very long time. They became close when they both worked on the X-Men movie franchise.
Their ‘bromance’ became even more legendary when Channel 4 News marked the release Days of the Future Past.
In 2013 during an appearance on the Graham Norton Show, Ian jokingly said, “I’m going to marry Patrick.” This was in reference to Stewart’s upcoming wedding which Ian officiated.
The two then kissed each other on the red carpet back in May 2014, during the premiere of Mr. Holmes.
But recently on This Morning, Patrick revealed that their friendship almost took a wrong turn when Ian told him to not accept the role of Star Trek‘s Captain Jean-Luc Picard because he thought that it would ruin his acting career.

Patrick told Phillip Schofield that he told Ian that he was offered the role but Ian advised him not to take it.
“It became very public knowledge at the premiere last night. It was Ian McKellen and he was in Los Angeles at the time and I told him I had been offered this role in this series and he seriously warned me not to take the job because it wouldn’t be good for my career.
“I was doing quite well in London in the theatre and I shouldn’t abandon myself to this,” Patrick added.
But Ian apologized and admitted that he was wrong, because Patrick has seen success ever since he accepted the role.
“He has since admitted that he might have been wrong.”
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman said that Patrick told him that he would return to the franchise if his character still made sense.
“You know, we feel a tremendous responsibility to the fans who have loved [the Picard character], and Patrick himself, who took a massive leap of faith with us in choosing to come back and play Picard [after] he said he was done forever.”
During the premiere of Star Trek: Picard at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, in London, the two met again.
Ian then gave Patrick a kiss on the cheek then got down on one knee, as if he was proposing.
Both men then shared another kiss, which was no surprise to anyone.
Ian came out as a gay man back in 1988, and is an active member of the LGBTQ community.
With all the bromance between them, people started to think that Patrick himself was also gay.
Back in 2014, The Guardian mistakenly labeled Patrick as a gay man. Patrick wasn’t even offended, and even said that he was flattered.
“Quite frankly, I was utterly flattered by that assumption, and indeed the first contact I had was from Ian McKellen, who sent me an email saying, ‘Congratulations!’”
But Patrick has mentioned before on Conan that he ‘likes kissing other men’.
Patrick said that he would like to do it with Sean Connery with “maybe a bit of tongue”.
At the end of his appearance, Patrick and host Conan O’Brien locked lips.
“That was fantastic! I felt passion… you’re an iconic actor, a great man, and we kissed, and I felt like you suddenly accepted me as your better! Who says it’s unacceptable? If you say it, it will happen!”
