- Mommy Divine has been very protective of her daughter
On February 20, longtime couple Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli had their wedding in Bonifacio Global City.
The wedding was held in secret and was only revealed when Sarah’s bodyguard Jerry Tamara filed a complaint that Matteo had allegedly punched him.
In an episode of Wanted sa Radyo, Tamara told Raffy Tulfo everything he knew about the entire situation. According to reports, Matteo punched Tamara’s throat thinking that the latter told Sarah’s Mommy Divine about the wedding. Mommy Divine arrived unexpectedly at the venue and began fighting with the couple.
Tamara said that he didn’t know anything about a wedding and that he was very surprised when Matteo got physical. Tamara is still claiming he was and still is innocent, and that he did not say anything about any wedding.
“[W]ala naman akong alam sa ano nilang ‘yan eh. Ang sa akin lang po, ‘yung ginawa sa akin ni Sir Matteo. Bakit niya ako sinuntok na wala naman po akong ginagawa sa kanya?”
But Tamara said that he told Mommy Divine that Sarah asked him to stay at the party at Shangri-La without knowing that the entire thing was already the wedding reception.
Tamara again claimed that he is innocent, and was entirely clueless that Sarah got married.
“Hindi ko naman talaga alam na kinasal eh. Hindi ko talaga alam na may kasalanang nangyari. Blanko talaga kami,”
Tamara filed a blotter report at the Police Community Precinct 7, Taguig.
Mommy Divine allegedly immediately went after Matteo’s father Gianluca and confronted him about the whole thing. Mommy Divine had not been told about the wedding given that she was very much against the union.
“Anong pinaggagagawa niyo? Tinraydor niyo ako!” said Mommy Divine.
VIVA chairperson and founder Vic del Rosario went to the restaurant immediately in an effort to try and calm everybody down. Vic was able to talk to Mommy Divine and asked Sarah to leave.
“Agad-agad, ang sabi ko kay Sarah, ‘Mabuti pa, lumabas ka. Kami na lang ng mommy mo ang mag-uusap…’ Nag-usap kami, more than an hour,”
Mommy Divine aired out all her frustrations and was really surprised that she wasn’t informed.
“Tungkol doon sa nangyari, na-sorpresa siya. So noong time na ‘yon, parang hysterical. So marami siyang mga galit na sinasabi. Eh ako naman, binibigyan ko siya ng time para ilabas ang kanyang sama ng loob.”
Matteo did not release any statement, but said that he would let Vic do all the talking for him. Vic stated that Sarah did not know anything about Matteo punching Tamara.
“[K]inabukasan, nakausap ko si Sarah eh. Wala siyang nakita at wala siyang alam na sinuntok ‘yung bodyguard daw ni Matteo.
“So, ayon kay Sarah, ‘Hindi totoo ‘yon. Walang baril, wala lahat. Wala siyang narinig. ‘Yun lang ang masasabi ko,” Vic added.
Netizens were not happy with how Mommy Divine took the whole situation, calling it “Divine Intervention”.
While Mommy Divine is notoriously overprotective of Sarah, she might have some valid points.
First of all, Mommy Divine is a religious Catholic. One of the things that triggered her was the fact that her daughter got married in an Evangelical Church. Secondly, she wanted Sarah to sign a prenuptial agreement, and to transfer all her assets to her before getting married. And lastly, she wasn’t invited to the wedding.
During a live session back in April 2018, Sarah referred to her mom as her “number one critic”, but is also her biggest fan.
“Siya yung No. 1 nagki-critique sa akin, nagre-remind sa akin na, ‘O, Sarah, alagaan mo yung career mo, yung boses mo. Yung mga supporters mo, huwag mo sila pababayaan.'”
Sarah revealed that Mommy Divine had a lot of control regarding what songs she would sing or what kind of performance she would present, but said that she has been given ‘more freedom’ to do what she would like to do.
In an interview back in 2011, Mommy Divine was responded to her critics saying that her ‘overprotectiveness’ is too much, but she said that it is just “devotion to her family.”
Rayver Cruz, who is Sarah’s ex-boyfriend, made this criticism evident when he revealed that his communication with his ex-girlfriend was limited to text messages and Skype. The closest thing he could get to something physical was exchanging looks at each other inside the ABS-CBN building. Cruz said that this relationship wasn’t normal. They dated for a year, and were together alone only twice on different occasions. This was all due to Sarah’s parents keeping a very watchful eye on their daughter.
Mommy Divine said that Sarah needed her guidance at the time since her daughter did not have the right “relationship experience” because she has that “naive, trusting personality”.
“Sa nakikita ko sa kanya, hindi siya talaga puwedeng pabayaang mag-isa. ‘Yon ang nakikita ko kung bakit palagi ko siyang ginagabayan sa ngayon,”
Mommy Divine believes that the right man will come and that he will be God-sent. A perfect man to her will be someone who is willing to wait and will support her daughter’s dreams and aspirations.
“Ang lalaki, kung okay siya, willing siyang maghintay. Hindi niya sisirain ang buhay ng anak ko, hindi niya sisirain ang pangarap ng anak ko,”
Even when Sarah was already 26 years old, there were still rumors that Mommy Divine was still getting involved in her relationships. Back in 2014, Mommy Divine said that she was just reminding her daughter to keep on praying for the right man to come, but that the decision was all on Sarah.
“Lagi lang naming sinasabi na sana ‘yung lalaking pipiliin niya ay ‘yung masasandalan niya hapang-buhay. Hindi ‘yung puro emosyon na lang. Pakonswelo na lang ang pisikal, ang appearance.”
There were also recent rumors that suggested Mommy Divine was just using Sarah for her own benefit. According to a Reddit user named ThatPinkKid, Mommy Divine is a ‘crazy person’.
ThatPinkKid’s best friend used to work for Mommy Divine’s unsuccessful interior design concept business, which did not even reach its one year mark of operation. The best friend claimed that she felt weird working for Mommy Divine. On one occasion, Mommy Divine saw a picture of Matteo on a magazine cover with his abs exposed and said “eww yuck” as she threw the magazine away.
At one time, Mommy Divine called in a witch doctor when she found out that Matteo, along with her daughter, and Solenn Heussaff and Nico Bolzico went to Palawan and took a chopper there. She did this because she thought that Sarah was out of her mind.
The best friend also alleged that Mommy Divine asks Sarah for money whenever she feels like starting a business, and doesn’t really care if it is successful or not.
“On the milking cow note: all business by MD were either unsuccessful or unopened. Parang pag may maisipan lang na business, itatayo niya and walang pake if malugi. The brother of Sarah flies to Japan too often just to buy toys.”
The Reddit user’s best friend eventually quit because Mommy Divine wasn’t giving the salary on time.
Twitter page “Breaking” also confirmed that Mommy Divine actually wanted Sarah to transfer all her assets to her before she got married. Mommy Divine was also intervening with the wedding plans prior to the whole event.
