“I still failed as a teacher.” Teacher’s reply goes viral after a student threatens to fail him in evaluations

A teacher in Marikina was unfazed when a student joked about failing him in the evaluation.

  • He told the student that he doesn’t care and that it is only a reflection of how his teaching affected the student.
  • He added he wasn’t the one who failed his student but the student failed himself.

Sometimes students don’t understand the reason they get low grades in school and they act up against their teacher in reaction.

One teacher was unfazed when his student told him that he would give him a bad evaluation because he failed the latter.

Although the student said it in a joking manner, if it was other teachers, they would’ve been annoyed by such a message.

Not netizen Paul Pascual. He teaches Oral Communication and EAPP to Grade 11 students at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina.

On March 7 he posted the message of his student and his reply. “Sir, dahil binagsak mo ko, babagsak din kita sa evaluation. Char!” the student wrote.

Pascual replied by saying that he doesn’t care as his real evaluation can be already seen in the student himself.

“I don’t care. Hindi ako takot. Ang tunay kong evaluation ay ikaw. Kahit mataas nga ako sa evaluation pero wala naman ako nagawa para matuto ka. I still failed as a teacher. Paper lang yon. Ibigay mo na lang yung perfect rating sa mga teachers mo na di nagtuturo pero puro line of 9 magbigay. Wala ako pakialam.”

He added that he didn’t fail the student. The student failed himself but not complying and meeting the deadlines. “Do not blame me. I’m more than willing to teach sa summer or magbackload ka sakin for free.”

The teacher told Dailypedia about his relationship with his students and how they keep on telling him that he’s not a “typical teacher”.

“Nakakainspire daw ako, firm and strict. Pero funny. Hindi kasi traditional ang approach ko. I believe that as a teacher dapat flexible ka. Nagbabago ang mundo, dapat pati ang approach natin magbago,” he said.

And instead of getting angry, he understood what his student felt when he gave a failing grade.

“I know the feeling. As a teacher, it is my duty not just to teach the lesson in the textbook, but to teach them lessons in life.”

He added that it’s better to develop their Adversity Quotient that than their IQ and EQ. When it comes to other teachers, he told them to have more faith.

“Teaching is not easy, sometimes you need to walk an extra mile just for them to learn. Pero laban lang, wag tayo mawalan ng pag-asa. Sila ang pag-asa ng Bayan, pero tayo ang tagapag bigay pag-asa. So let’s do our job. Let’s fulfill our calling.”

And with students, he advised them to do better each day.

“Do not let your grades define you. It is just the result of your performance today, so do better tomorrow. Laging may second chance. Education lang ang isang bagay na di pwedeng nakawin satin, kaya pahalagahan natin.”
