Alex Diaz calls out government for prioritizing economic relations with China instead of COVID relief efforts

Alex Diaz slammed the government after it stated that Filipinos are now required to wear face shields when going out.

  • He stated that some people can’t even buy food, let alone face shields.
  • He also accused the government of prioritizing its relations with China that the wellbeing of its constituents.

As the Department of Transportation announced that it now requires commuters to not only wear a mask but a face shield as well when going out, Alex Diaz can’t help but voice out his opinions on Twitter.

In a Tweet he wrote last August 6, he pointed out that some Filipinos can’t even afford food to eat and much less a face shield.

He then described the government as “incompetent” as it prioritized its relations with China when the COVID-19 outbreak was still starting eight months ago.

Despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s claims that the Philippines was one of the first countries who declared a travel ban against China, the country actually announced only a ban on the covered travelers from Wuhan and Hubei province, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak at that time.

On January 30, then Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo stated that the Philippines can ban flights from China but would not do so yet.

Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III also explained why the government was not yet imposing a travel ban on tourists coming from mainland China at that time.

“If we do this, then the concerned country – China in this case – might question why we’re not doing the same for all other countries that have reported cases of the new coronavirus. It’s very tricky… but we commit to take this into consideration,” he said.

A netizen then questioned Diaz about what he’s fighting for, saying that some people can even afford alcoholic drinks and drugs but can’t even afford a Php50 face shield.

“Does this comment even deserve a proper answer?” Diaz wrote.

He then said that it feels “almost cruel” to enjoy the day when he knows what the state of the Philippines is.

The Philippines now has more than 119,000 COVID-19 cases, making it the country with the most number of infections in Southeast Asia.
