If being widely regarded as the beginning of the modern ‘teleserye’ isn’t a testament to how massively popular and successful Pangako Sa’Yo is, then I don’t know what is.
The Kapamilya series did not only achieve incredible fame in the Philippines, but it also went to become one of the most successful and one of the most exported Filipino content overseas. Its lead stars, Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa, even established celebrity statuses in Africa, Indonesia, and other parts of the world.
Pangako Sa’ Yo is a multi-generational love story, with its narrative mainly focused on the bitter rivalry between Amor Powers (Eula Valdez) and Claudia Buenavista (Jean Garcia) and the fairytale, us-against-the-world romance between Yna Macaspac (Kristine Hermosa) and Angelo Buenavista (Jericho Rosales).
At its peak popularity, Pangako Sa’yo was able to hit an all-time high rating of 64.9%, which is only second to Esperanza’s 68%. The huge popularity of the show catapulted both Rosales and Hermosa to superstardom. It also revitalized Valdez and Garcia’s popularity and sent it to a new height. Subsequent shows, including movies and new TV series, came for the major cast members of the show.
A strong proof of the success and fame of both Valdez and Garcia, is the fact that they were tapped by several big brands to endorse their products. The two actresses reprised their roles in a Mcdonald’s television commercial. The barbecue chicken McDo TVC of the duo was released during the height of the show’s popularity in 2002. In the said TV commercial, Amor Powers and Claudia Buenavista were arguing what made barbecue chicken McDo very special. The two however ended up settling their arguments and decided to share the goodness of McDo, together, allowing viewers to witness a rare moment when the two characters weren’t destroying each other’s lives.
After Pangako Sa ’Yo run, Valdez and Garcia went on to star in a few more shows, including the 2005 series, Kampanerang Kuba, and the 2009 Kapuso drama, All About Eve.
