Production for the controversial film has gone full swing as it targets a July release date in both cinemas and streaming platforms.
Producers of the highly-anticipated and controversial Darryl Yap film, Maid in Malacañang, shared exciting tidbits about their project in a virtual press conference held on June 25.
Senator Imee Marcos and Viva head honcho Vic del Rosario expressed pride in pushing through the film into a reality.
Answering critics who cast doubts on the intent of the film, Senator Marcos shared “For me at sa aking pamilya, panahon na na magkwento kami kung ano ang nangyari sa Malacañang…Hindi natin binabago ang katotohanan, dinadagdagan lamang ng kaalaman namin.
“(For me and for my whole family, it’s about time that we told what really happened in Malacañang. We’re not revising anything; we’re merely adding new information that only we know).”
That said, the lawmaker admitted that while she does not intend the film to be controversial, Viva and the whole team are ready to confront controversies that will surely arise from the making of the film.
“We should have an entertaining, fun filled, controversy-laden movie. I’m not looking for controversy, but unfortunately there will have to be some truths told and lies debunked,” she said.
Because of the film’s scope, both Del Rosario and Marcos acknowledged the need for a huge budget to realize Darryl Yap’s ambitious film. He shared how he happily obliged to accommodate the director’s requests, especially on the expenses for production.
“Ok lang ‘yung budget di ba. Kasi kinakailangan. Tama lang naman sa scope ng work. With Direk Darryl alam mo naman, spoiled…spoiled di ba Imee (Marcos).
“(Budget is not a problem. It ‘s just appropriate for such big project. With Darryl Yap, you know, he’s spoiled..he is right, Imee?,” he jokingly said.
“Oo..yan ang spoiled brat ng Viva (Yes, that’s right. He really is Viva’s spoiler brat),” Marcos agreed.
“Hindi paawat ang budget, dahil malapalasyo lahat eh. Kaya ganon talaga. pro ang mahalaga ay maipahiwatig ang kwento, na alam natin sa isang banda dahil nanood tayo ng telebisyon, nabasa natin sa dyaryo, nabalitaan sa iba’t ibang libro.
(He’s unstoppable when it comes to budget, because understandably, we’re talking about palaces. But the more important thing is that we are able to share the story, when a lot of people learned from TV, newspapers, books). she shared, as she also expressed her intent to tell her family’s story.
“Pero sa kabilang banda, eh kwento lamang ng isang pamilya at ng kanilang mga kasambahay. Yun lang, ganon lang kasimple. Kayat kinakailangang intindihin natin na siguro makasaysayan nga, pero actually, pangkaraniwan lang talaga.
(On another side, it’s a story of a family and their house helpers. That’s it. It’s that simple. That’s why it is a must people understand that while it is indeed historical, it is also a simple story)” she added.
Cesar Montano is the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., Ruffa Gutierrez as the former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Diego Loyzaga as Ferdinand Marcos Jr in his 30s, Cristine Reyes as Senator Imee Marcos, and Ella Cruz as Irene Marcos.
Maid in Malacañang is a family movie that sheds light upon the last 72 hours of the Marcos family at the Malacañang palace before they fled the country to Hawaii, following the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986.
