Rising Incidence of Hunger in Filipino Families: SWS Report Reveals Alarming Trends

These statistics underscore the severity of the issue and the dire circumstances faced by some families in meeting their basic nutritional needs.

In a recent report released by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), it was revealed that the number of Filipino families experiencing hunger has significantly increased during the second quarter of the year.

The data highlights a concerning trend that demands attention and immediate action from the government and various sectors of society.

According to the SWS report, 10.4% of Filipino families experienced “involuntary hunger,” which means they were unable to afford to eat at least once in the past three months. This figure is higher compared to the 9.8% recorded in March 2023, indicating a worrisome rise in food insecurity among Filipino households.

The report further details that out of the affected families, 8.3% experienced “moderate hunger,” while 2.1% faced “severe hunger.” These statistics underscore the severity of the issue and the dire circumstances faced by some families in meeting their basic nutritional needs.

The breakdown of hunger incidents by geographical regions showed that Metro Manila had the highest incidence, with 15.7% of families experiencing hunger in June 2023. This was followed by Balance Luzon (Luzon outside of Metro Manila) at 11.3%, Visayas at 9.3%, and Mindanao at 6.3%.

SWS commented on the rise in overall hunger incidents, stating, “The 0.6-point rise in Overall Hunger between March 2023 and June 2023 was due to increases in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon, combined with a steady percentage in the Visayas and a sharp decline in Mindanao.”

The alarming increase in hunger incidents in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon has led many to question the root causes of the problem. Rising food prices, unemployment, and economic challenges are some of the factors that may contribute to the growing issue of food insecurity among Filipino families.

As the nation grapples with the impact of the pandemic and various economic challenges, the issue of hunger cannot be ignored. The government, in collaboration with private organizations and concerned citizens, must work together to find sustainable solutions to address the needs of vulnerable families.

The SWS survey, conducted from June 28 to July 1, 2023, involved face-to-face interviews with 1,500 individuals aged 18 and above. These findings serve as a crucial wake-up call for all stakeholders to take proactive measures to alleviate hunger and ensure that no Filipino family goes to bed hungry. Addressing this issue is not only a matter of social responsibility but also an imperative for building a more resilient and equitable society.
