Content Creator’s quest for Korean Glass Skin turns into Skin Care Nightmare

His advocacy now focuses on spreading awareness to prevent others from experiencing similar skincare nightmares.

26-year-old content creator Benjamin Madiza recently faced severe consequences after using a face mask, as reported by ’24 Oras’ on June 1, 2024.

Benjamin’s experience gained widespread attention when his face suddenly appeared aged and swollen after using a face mask, prompting him to share his story to warn others about the dangers of uninformed skincare practices.

Speaking in an interview, Benjamin described the initial sensation: “Parang namanhid po siya. Pero ano po, nararamdaman ko lang po yung ano, yung cool no?” He recalled removing the mask and being shocked by the changes in his face. “Pagkatapos, pagkatanggal ko po ng face mask na yun po, nakita ko na po yung pagbabago sa mukha ko, so na-trauma ako,” he added.

According to Benjamin, he had used the face mask for the first time on May 27, 2024, without consulting a dermatologist beforehand due to limited access to dermatological services in his area.

“Korean glass skin” refers to a highly desired skincare trend characterized by clear, poreless, translucent, and luminous skin akin to the smooth and flawless appearance of glass.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Benjamin emphasized the importance of caution and research in skincare routines, especially for those with sensitive skin. “Natakot po ako sa mukha kong tumanda, kumulubot,” he admitted. “Bilang content creator, magiging informative po yun para sa lahat na kailangan, yung mga may skin ano po, sensitive po, maging aware po sa mga ginagamit nila.”

Dr. Gwen Bagay-Matias, a dermatologist consulted by ’24 Oras,’ shed light on Benjamin’s case. “Baka hindi siya hiyang dun sa product na ginamit niya kaya ayun, nag-react yung skin niya, namaga talaga siya. So nagmukha siya na wrinkled na nagmukha siyang matanda,” she explained. Dr. Matias further warned about allergens triggering histamine production, which can lead to airway swelling and, in severe cases, anaphylactic shock.

To prevent such incidents, consumers are advised to carefully review product ingredients and conduct patch tests before full application. Products should also bear approval from regulatory agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In the event of an allergic reaction, experts recommend immediate removal of the product and thorough rinsing with water. If symptoms persist, seeking medical attention promptly or taking antihistamines is crucial.

Benjamin’s story serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with unverified skincare practices and the importance of seeking professional advice before trying new products.
