GMA News weather reporter Anjo Pertierra rescued from flooded home

Anjo Pertierra saves only one bag

GMA News weather reporter Anjo Pertierra faced a harrowing experience during the onslaught of Typhoon Carina in Metro Manila, as he was among the residents evacuated by search and rescue teams from the flood-hit areas of Marikina City.

During a live episode of GMA Network’s morning program ‘Unang Hirit,’ Anjo recounted his ordeal when floodwaters began to invade his home.

Despite the severe conditions caused by Typhoon Carina, Anjo made the decision to report for duty, providing the latest weather updates.

A Facebook post by GMA Public Affairs on July 25, 2024, features photos of the Kapuso host with the Marikina River in the background.

The caption read, “THANK YOU FOR SHOWING UP, ANJO! Pinasok at lubog na sa baha ang bahay ni Anjo Pertierra sa Marikina. Ibinahagi rin niya na isang bag lang ang naisalba at naidala niya kahapon. Pero kahit lubos na naapektuhan ng bagyo, pumasok si Anjo at nag-duty para sa #UnangHirit para maghatid ng ulat tungkol sa bagyong #CarinaPH at habagat. Maraming salamat, Anjo!”

During the episode of ‘Unang Hirit,’ Anjo detailed the rapid rise of floodwaters that inundated his basement room, making it impossible to open the door due to the sheer volume of water and intense pressure.

The water level reached up to his chest, which he noted would be up to the neck or ears for an average Filipino, given his height of 6’2”.

Anjo shared that even his car, parked outside, was submerged. He and other residents were rescued using paddle boats and the efforts of rescuers.

“Wala akong nasalbang gamit. Ang nakuha ko lang, apat na T-shirt, gawa nga po ng sobrang bilis po ng pagtaas ng tubig sa aking bahay. Pero wala po talaga akong nasalba na kahit ano,” Anjo lamented.

Adding to his story, Anjo mentioned that the clothes he wore while reporting from the Marikina River were purchased by the stylist of their program, highlighting the immediate challenges he faced following the flood.

Despite his personal loss, Anjo’s dedication to his job and commitment to delivering timely weather reports have garnered praise and admiration from viewers and colleagues alike.
