Reactions varied following Chloe San Jose’s decision to decline a media interview on the evening of August 13, as she accompanied her partner, 2-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, back to the Philippines.
Following Yulo’s successful stint at the 2024 Paris Olympics, he returned to the Philippines with Chloe.
Footage from various news and media outlets showed the content creator by Yulo’s side as they walked through Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, disembarking from their chartered Philippine Airlines flight from Dubai.
The media frenzy surrounding Yulo and other Filipino athletes who brought pride to the country was evident. In a video shared on social media, Chloe was seen happily taking selfies with fans welcoming the Philippine delegation.
At one point, GMA News anchor and TV host Mariz Umali approached Chloe for an interview. However, Chloe promptly declined, saying, “Ay sorry, wag na mag-interview”. Mariz respected the decision and responded, “Huwag na daw, and we respect that,” to which Chloe replied, “Sorry po”.

Chloe has been the subject of controversy recently due to issues between Carlos and Angelica Yulo, and accusations of her overshadowing Carlos. Some critics have labeled her as an “epal” girlfriend, alleging that she frequently accompanies Carlos and steals the spotlight, including at press conferences where she is seen as attempting to share in the limelight.
Chloe has defended herself against such criticisms, stating that she has never sought media attention and has never tried to overshadow Carlos.
The public’s response to Chloe’s decision was mixed. Some applauded her for standing by Carlos and avoiding media interviews to prevent stealing his spotlight, while others criticized her for what they perceived as a dismissive attitude towards Mariz, who was simply seeking a brief interview.
What do you think, readers? Was Chloe’s decision to skip the media interview the right move?
