A recent social media post has ignited a heated discussion regarding the involvement of Trinidad Famy, Emilio Aguinaldo’s mother, in the assassination of General Antonio Luna.
The controversy began with a Facebook post by user Pepe Alas on August 9, which claimed that historian Ambeth Ocampo revealed at the GSIS Historians’ Fair that Trinidad Famy de Aguinaldo was responsible for ordering Luna’s assassination.
The post, which received significant attention with over 108,000 reactions, 3,000 comments, and 55,000 shares, stated: “BREAKING NEWS: Ambeth R. Ocampo reveals at the GSIS Historians’ Fair that it was actually Emilio Aguinaldo’s mother (Trinidad Famy de Aguinaldo) who ordered the assassination of Antonio Luna!”
This claim has been met with skepticism. According to a Facebook post by Ericka Buenaflor, who also attended Ocampo’s talk, the historian did not explicitly state that Trinidad Famy was responsible for Luna’s death.
Buenaflor noted, “There wasn’t actually a declaration earlier that it was indeed the mother of Aguinaldo who ordered the assassination of General Luna in Cabanatuan. Prof. Ambeth only spoke from the sources that he has and connected it with each other to form a claim.”
Buenaflor added that Ocampo’s comments were interpretative rather than definitive revelations.
Following the backlash, Pepe Alas deleted the post and issued an apology, stating, “I would like to apologize to him and to all his fellow historians who were disturbed by my post. I will offer no excuses, just that I’m sorry.”
As of now, historian Ambeth Ocampo has not publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the claims about Trinidad Famy’s alleged role in Luna’s assassination.
