OPM icon and AfterImage frontman Wency Cornejo sparked heated discussions online after claiming that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. only won the 2022 presidential election because of his running mate, Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a Facebook post on April 20, Cornejo, son of renowned newscaster, Mel Tiangco, and a known Duterte supporter, wrote, “Nanalo si BBM dahil kay VP Sara. Period!”
The post has since garnered nearly 7,000 reactions, mostly positive, along with over 1,200 comments and shares.
The statement reignites the ongoing debate between Marcos and Duterte supporters about which political clan holds greater sway among Filipino voters. The two families, historically powerful in Philippine politics, formed a formidable alliance in the 2022 elections under the UniTeam banner, defeating the opposition led by then-Vice President Leni Robredo.
Cornejo’s post drew strong support from Duterte loyalists. One commenter referenced Marcos Jr.’s loss in the 2016 vice-presidential race, stating, “Tama. Kung malakas si BBM, dapat nanalo siya(ng) VP (noong) 2016.”
Another user claimed, “Kahit bali-baliktarin, nakabalik ang Marcos dahil sa mga DUTERTE!!!!!!!!”
A voter admitted, “Turot. Binoto ko c BBM dahil lng ky VP Sara. Period.”
Cornejo’s vocal support for the Dutertes is consistent with his previous posts, including one condemning the International Criminal Court’s arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The singer’s remarks reflect the lingering divide among supporters of the Marcos-Duterte tandem, despite their successful 2022 partnership.
The debate continues to highlight the complex dynamics between the two political dynasties and their influence on Filipino voters.
