Community College professors Bruce Cantrell, 63, and Jessica Fain, 25, broke the world record for longest time spent living underwater. The two spent 73 days two hours and 34 minutes underwater, surpassing the 1992 world record of Richard Presley who lived for 69 days and 19 minutes in the same environment.
On Monday, December 15, the biology professors from Roane State Community College in East Tennessee surfaced for the first time after more than two months of living and conducting classes in Jules’ Undersea Lodge located in Key Largo.
As part of their mission to educate and inspire people about ocean conservation, the pair used the underwater hotel to hold their online lecture series dubbed as “Classroom Under the Sea”. They also conducted video chats with students across the US and around the world.
The 65,000 minutes lecture series featured renowned astronaut Buzz Aldrin and marine life artist Wyland in some of their episodes.
It was a mission accomplished for Cantrell. He said: “Going in, we had goals that we wanted to accomplish. At the end of 73 days, I think we’ve exceeded those goals. We’ve reached a lot of people. Now the challenge for us is to carry that forward. ”
Meanwhile, Fain is hoping that people learned the importance of protecting the ocean through their project.
“I really hope that people take away from this that the oceans are something that we need to protect,” she said.
