Local Singaporean Asks PM Loong to Reduce Number of OFWs in an Open Letter

A Singaporean local asks Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to reduce the number of Filipino workers in Singapore in an open letter published in The Real Singapore. This was published just a few days after a Filipino nurse made headlines for thrashing Singaporeans on Social Media, which has become a serious issue.

The local who wrote the open letter, named Jafri Basron, cited three reasons why there is a need to reduce the number of OFWs:

First, Basron mentioned that many Filipinos are causing “social problems and resentment” among the locals. He further stated that it has become difficult for the locals to find employment since the jobs that could be meant for them are held by Filipinos in almost all industries.

Secondly,  Basron stated that Filipinos lack experience and are not professional. Stating from his personal experience, he mentioned that employers only hire Filipinos because they are willing to accept lower pay than the locals.

Third, Basron also said that many Filipinos have been posting “several offensive and provocative” statements against Singaporeans and Muslims.

Basron ended his letter by asking Prime Minister Loong  to reduce the provision of available jobs for Filipinos, and instead, give more opportunities for other nationalities.

With almost 170,000 Filipinos working in Singapore, many of their families will get affected if Prime Minister Loong would actually heed the cry of this Singaporean and other locals. And while this is only an open letter, it brought so many issues between Filipinos and Singaporeans. But what do you readers think, are Basron’s reasons enough to limit the number of OFWs in Singapore? Leave a comment below.

  1. In my opinion, this kind of man, his intention has something to do with his concern to its fellow Singaporean citizen. And he has the right to say it so.
