Should the government reconsider the policy on face shields?

Dr. Gideon Lasco pointed out that all countries that have controlled their COVID situation never required their citizens to wear face shields.

People are hoping for the reconsideration of the policy requiring Filipinos to wear face shields whenever they step out of them as there is no systematic study proving that face shields can reduce COVID-19 transmission.

Medical anthropologist Dr. Gideon Lasco pointed out that all countries that have controlled their COVID situation never required their citizens to wear face shields.

“It’s time to end the Philippines’ baseless, inconvenient, and environmentally harmful face shield mandate, especially in outdoor spaces where there’s zero evidence of its benefit,” Dr. Lasco said in a recent tweet.

People also mentioned the temperature and humidity in the Philippines which may make Filipinos breathless.

“The the face shield capital of the world: Philippines!” a netizen wrote.

Another netizen questioned Dr. Edsel Salvana‘s claim that countries that decided not to use face shields are in a much worse situation than the country.

Someone said that aside from it being uncomfortable, it is not good for the environment because of the plastic material.

While others are teaching people how to properly double mask, the Philippines is still insisting on wearing a face mask and a face shield.

Another described face shields as “pure business.”

“Pinagkakakitaan lang talaga ang mga Pinoy ng mga mapagsamantalang negosyante from China and [the Philippines].”

A netizen pointed out how the Philippines has thousands of new cases every single day even with the use of face shields.

“Kahit self-discipline nalang in exchange of face shields.”

The government previously based a policy on the 2020 study saying that 12 out of 62 community workers tested positive for the virus after visiting thousands of households in May 2020.
