Netizens teased the lawmaker for her recent statement about Ferdinand ‘Bongbong Marcos Jr.’’s becoming President.
‘An Act of God’–that’s how Leyte 4th District Representative Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez described the possibility of the defeat of 2016 vice-presidentiable and if former dictator’s son Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. is elected as the 17th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
Torres-Gomez and her husband, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, recently publicly endorsed the candidacy of Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio as president and vice-president, respectively.
In a statement, the model-turned-actress-turned-politician said, “Here is a man who is a poster boy for unity. He offers unity, healing moving forward,” said Torres-Gomez as she introduced Marcos Jr., during the campaign rally. We always say that it is an act of God, the presidency is destiny. And if it is in God’s will for this man to be our next President, I know that he will be the best that we ever have in this country”
On twitter, netizens poked fun at Torres-Gomez’s statement, with many teasing her for apparent ignorance of what ‘An Act of God’ is—although of course, most people know what she exactly meant.
“Lucy Torres telling us that a BBM win is an act of God reminds me of the plagues of Egypt” said Jai Cabajar.

Another user seemingly noticed how both Torres-Gomez and her presidentiable are alike, “BBM: I consider myself a machiavellian, Lucy: BBM is an act of God. Agre na agree ako sa inyong dalawa…” he said in a tweet.

“In legal parlance, when we say “ACT OF GOD,” it means an unpreventable NATURAL DISASTER, such as a flood or earthquake. So, I am with Lucy on this.” a netizen with user handle @Atty_ICBP shared.

Election lawyer, Emil Marañon III, meanwhile, wondered whether the lawmaker has someone to remind her what an “act of God” means. “Agree, nakaambang “act of God” si Bongbong Marcos. Kalebel ng bagyo, lindol, baha, delubyo at matinding sakuna.
Wait, wala man lang ba nagsabi kay Madam Moderator Lucy kung ano ibig sabihin ng “act of God” he shared in his tweet.

The couple’s endorsement came days after the endorsement of officials in both Samar and Leyte provinces. Vice President Leni Robredo scored endorsement from the governor of Northern Samar, Edwin Ongchuan, and 1st District Representative Paul Daza.
The lone female presidentiable in the 2022 national polls also received the backing of the 21 out of 24 Northern Samar Mayors. Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone, alongside 20 of the province’s 24 mayors, also pledged support for Robredo. Bongbong Marcos, on the other hand, unsurprisingly won Leyte’s local executives’ endorsement.
