Scuba divers diving off the coast of the Ticao Island in Masbate, Philippines encountered the tubular worm-like creature later identified as a pyrosome. A pyrosome is a free floating tunicate that is actually made up of a colony of 1,000’s of individual creatures known as zooids. These zooids range in size and can be as tiny as coin with some reaching lengths of several meters or 10 feet. The zooids are sure jointly in a “gelatinous tunic,” which is why the colony appears to be like a purplish-blue gummy worm. It is really also bioluminescent and can emit a blue-green chemical light, which is particularly radiant in the dark.

This video uploaded by Ryan Carpenter on YouTube shows about 4-feet-long and 4 to 5 inches in diameter pyrosome, looks terrifying, but it’s not really a threat to humans as like many other giants of the sea.
