The Lenten season has started this week. Traditions are fairly observed during holy week. One of these is Visita Iglesia which happens typically on late afternoon or early evening of Holy Thursday.
Also known as “Church Visit”, this tradition is a devotion of visiting churches in commemorating and medidating the passion of Christ.
Looking for churches you may one to add on to your “visita”, here are the churches around Luzon where you can perform spiritual duties.
1.) Manila Cathedral
Also called the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica, was formerly built in 1571 by Juan De Vivero, a secular priest.
It was a simple parish made of nipa and bamboo. The holy place has been been a venue for Papal masses.
Three years ago, the Cathedral was renovated until 2014, which includes upgrading of facilities with LED lighting, digital sound systems, and carbon-retrofitted structural foundation.

2.)The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag
Manaoag is commonly knows as the “Catholic Mecca in Luzon” and “Pilgrim Center of the North”.
In late 1600s, Augustinian fathers founded a christian mission which they called Mission of Sta. Monica. Their successor, Dominicans who are devotees of Mother Mary placed the town under the mantle of protection of the “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary”.
Our Lady of Manaoag has been responding to petitions of devotees. It is greatly known for taking actions in many people who are seeking miracles in their lives.

3.) San Agustin Church
Founded in 1571, San Agustin Church was originally known as “Inglesia de San Pablo” claiming the the title, the oldest stone church (since 1589) in the Philippines.
Augustinians administer the church, which prides itself as the wedding capital of the Philippines. Not only it’s a popular church for uniting two hearts but its imposing carved structure tells a million story how the country was shaped into what it is today.
It was declared by UNESCO as World Heritage site 1993.

4.) Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus and Columbarium.
The shrine is envisioned to be the center of devotion to the Saint in Asia. The design and structure was inspired by the Reliquary of St. Thérèse.
The building is shaped like a cross, as most Shrines are, with a long nave and two shorter transepts.
The Shrine’s architectural style is Classical Contemporary, with a column-less interior and sleek, rounded lines. It stands at 35 meters from street level to the tip of the dome ceiling and can seat up to 1,800 people comfortably. Its aisle is 50 meters long and is ideal for weddings.

5.) Transfiguration of Christ Parish
The Transfiguration of Church Parish is a new-built church in Diocese of Antipolo that was canonically erected on December 12, 2002.
The dedication rites were presided by Most Rev. Francisco de Leon, DD (Auxiliary Bishop of Antipolo) together with Most Rev. Roberto Mallari (Bishop of San Jose, Nueva Ecija) & Most Rev. Jose Rojas (Bishop of Libmanan, Camarines Sur).

6.) National Shrine of the Divine Mercy
One of the known Catholic pilgrimage site in Bulacan is the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy located in Marilao.
The shrine is surrounded by life sized images of the station of the cross where pilgrims get to pray and visit.

7.) Kamay ni Hesus
A 5-hectare shrine featuring a healing mass and and life size statues of 14 Stations of the Cross is located at the the slopes of Mt. Banahaw.
Kamay ni Hesus has become popular pilgrimage site for its huge outdoor museum with religious life-size replicas of characters from the holy bible such as Adam and Eve, The Lat Supper, Garden of Eden, Pieta, Noah’s Ark and the like.

8.) Our Lady of Lourdes Parish

In finding comfort and solace, you may visit an auxilliary church for the devotees of “Our Lady of Lourdes” and “St. Pio of Pietrelcina” which is located in Tagaytay City. The church is administered by Capuchin, Order of Franciscan Minors.

9.)Shrine of Our Lady of the Abondoned
Our Lady of the Abandoned is the patroness of Marikina City. The image is a representation of the Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus Christ that is venerated for the abandoned ones. The shrine was honored with an episcopal coronation last May 12,2002 that was conforred by Most Rev. Crisostomo Yalung, assisted by the former President of the Republic of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

10.) Quiapo Church
Known as Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, Quiapo Church is located in the District of Manila.
The church is the home of Black Nazarene statue, which feast day is celebrated every January.
Every year, million flocks to take part in barefoot procession as devotees try to get closer in the image so their prayers be granted.
