Actor Tom Rodriguez helps beggar to study but 11-year old now out of school

Rommel Quimenales, who wants to become an actor like his idol Tom Rodriguez, was featured in GMANews TV documentary show Front Row. His story caught the attention of Tom, who has reached out to him after he had watched the episode.

Tom immediately posted on Twitter and asked for a help to know the whereabouts of the 11-year old boy, who often seen begging along the street of Quezon City.

As we can recall, Rommel’s photo of sleeping on the sidewalk with his loyal dog Badgi on his chest, became viral on social media.

The following day, the Kapuso actor was able to find Cristina Joven, who is taking care of Rommel. Tom promised to Crisanta to finance the schooling of the child.

He sent Rommel and Badgi to the doctor for a check up. The results showed that Rommel is healthy but his stray needs treatment for ringworms.

“Tinanong ko si Tom kung pwedeng ampunin na lang niya ako, kahit maglinis na lang ako ng condo niya. Pero sabi niya sa akin, hindi daw ‘yun ang dapat na ginagawa ng mga bata,” Rommel told Coconuts Manila.

(“I asked Tom if he could adopt me, I can clean his condo [in return]. But he said to me, ‘It’s not what kids should do.'”)

He added that the actor is in search for a foster parent who can look after him.

On the Front Row episode, Rommel was seen going back to school but three days later, he dropped out. He is seen roaming around the streets not for begging, but for selling Sampaguita.

He said he quit attending school because his sister and her husband weren’t going home. No one is at home every time he will arrive from school.

“Gusto ko nga po mag-aral eh, kaya lang hindi umuuwi sa bahay ‘yung ate ko at hindi ko alam kung saan siya hahanapin,” he said.

(“I really want to study, the thing is, my sister is not going home and I’m clueless where to find her.”)

On the other hand, Santa can only take care of him temporarily as her husband disapproved to adopt the kid due to huge responsibility that is placed on them as parents in raising their three kids.

As for his studies, Rommel says he wants to transfer to a school near Sct Ybardolaza.

Department of Social Welfare and Development said that Rommel won’t be eligible for adoption since he still has a guardian (his sister) as reported by Coconuts Manila.
