UPDATED: “100-Peso Project” created by a Netizen to help a disabled vendor from Bicutan

Social media has become a popular medium to relay stories to people. It’s a powerful tool that keeps us updated on what is happening around us. When used wisely, it can be something that can keep us connected to the society.

One netizen tried to make the most out of social media, and put it to good use. Kinah Villanueva shared in her post some photos and the story of a disabled man she met on Gen. Santos Avenue in Bicutan. He does not beg for alms, but instead sells bread for a living. Villanueva said her heart melted at the sight of him: he was thin, hunchbacked, and mute, but was greatly touched at his determination and perseverance.

“Naisip kong kuhanan siya ng litrato para magsilbing inspirasyon ito sa iyo at sa akin. Pangako ko sa kanya na dapat makilala siya sa FB dahil sa kanyang sipag at tiyaga. Hindi kagaya ng mga pulubi na nagkukunwaring may kapansanan para makapaglimos.”

(I decided to share this picture of diligence and persistence to serve as an inspiration to you and me. His hard work is sincere unlike other beggars who pretend to be disabled just to get alms.)

Villanueva called on to other online users who live in Bicutan or to whoever will pass along the Gen. Santos Ave. to go buy some goods from the “extra special” vendor. She also requested we say a prayer for healing and ask for more blessings for the man.

The comments section was filled with positive responses from netizens. Some shared their experience with the same guy. Others even expressed their intention to help.

K. Damian: “Thanks for sharing… And thank God for u Kinah, spending time and really paying attention to whom u see and meet. God bless u for what u did! Praying God is the man’s help and refuge!!”

Wla na syang mahahati kya binigyan nya nlng ng kendi na tinda nya (He’s kind, I saw someone gave him food and he shared with a homeless kid. When another beggar came, he gave the kid some candies).”

R. Delgado:Ms kinah ilapit nyo dn po s Pdao Taguig may mga programa po ang mayor nyn thru dswd slp o ung Sustainable livelihood program (You may seek help from Pdao Taguig, we have DSWD SLP or sustainable livelihood programs).”

Mc. De Guzman:Gusto q tumulong po (I want to help).”

Her post has been shared for more than 9,000 times as of this writing, and has captured the hearts of some generous online users who expressed their intention to help the disabled guy.

Netizens were so eager to help that they created a group they called “100-Peso-Project” to provide a small sari-sari store for “kuya“, the disabled vendor. The aim is to collect Php 100 from anyone who are willing to donate and open up a small store to sustain “kuya’s” everyday needs. To anyone who wants to share their blessings, here is the link for the group: 100-Peso Project
