Senator Nancy Binay confirmed to writer Jobert Sucaldito rumors that she was mistaken for a maid in her own home.
In his column in Bandera, Sucaldito shared the incident, which happened during a breakfast gathering hosted by Vice President Jejomar Binay for several mayors in his residence. Nancy had just gotten out of bed and went straight to the kitchen, clad in a white shirt and shorts. She was helping out their maids prepare breakfast when she was called by one of her father’s mayoral guests who said to her, “Inday, pahingi din ako pagkain. [Inday, please give me some food as well.]” The senator wasn’t able to do anything more than oblige the mayor’s request.
On her way back, the mayor who had called Nancy “Inday” was told by another mayor, “Hala ka pare, si Sen. Nancy yung inutusan mo. [Uh-oh, you just gave an order to Sen. Nancy].” When Nancy returned with the plate of food, the mayor hurriedly apologized.
Nancy is to be commended, though, for not taking offense the in the situation. Laughing, Nancy had replied, “Okay lang po iyon. Bahay namin ito kaya dapat lang po na pagsilbihan po namin kayo. Hindi po ako senator sa bahay na ito, isa lang po akong anak at utusan ng tatay ko. [That’s okay. This is our house so it’s only right for us to serve you. In this household I am not a senator but rather a daughter and my dad’s maid.]” Nancy was also laughing as she shared the story with Sucaldito.
Even though the senator reportedly hurriedly left the house after the incident, she still took things lightly and thought nothing much of it. Despite all the criticisms and issues that have been surrounding Nancy Binay, we have to hand it to her. She took this with the grace of a good host.
