Disturbing video shows how rats can swim up your toilet

It’s something that could be straight out of your worst nightmare: rats can make their way into your bathroom by swimming up your toilet.

How is that even possible?

Unbeknownst to many, these common house pests are excellent swimmers and have flexible bodies to get in and around pipes—very much like the ones in your toilet. In fact, they can hold their breath for up to three minutes and tread water for up to three days. Even Michael Phelps can’t beat these rodents at that.

Their sharp claws enable them to scale almost any vertical surface with ease, making it easy for them to sneak up a sewer pipe. Navigating your home’s pipes is also possible since a rat’s ribs is hinged at the spine. This allows them to squeeze their bodies into the smallest of gaps.

In case you’re wondering why rats have the urge to make a surprise appearance in your toilet bowl, that’s because a large amount of food is being flushed down a toilet. Also, human feces contains undigested food which rats can consume in a process known as coprophagy.
