Netizens are raving about an honest janitor who works at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Despite the bad news surrounding the workers at NAIA (like the perpetrators of the tanim bala scam), 31-year-old airport janitor Bobby Duarte proved that there are still people who can be models of honesty.
While cleaning one of the bathrooms, Duarte spotted a bag that had been left behind. Upon opening the bag, he discovered that it contained $4,400. Despite earning only Php12,000 ($251) a month, he was not tempted to keep the money for himself.
Instead, he brought it to the person in charge at the public address system of NAIA Terminal 1, in hopes that the rightful owner could hear the announcement. When no one came to claim the bag, he turned it over to the Lost and Found Section of the Intelligence and Investigation Division at the airport.
Because the bag also contained IDs and other personal effects, the group headed by Airport police Corporal Reynon Flores was able to contact its rightful owner, 71-year old balikbayan Reynaldo Domingo Bautista.
The balikbayan (returning overseas Filipino worker) was one of the passengers of Philippine Airlines flight PR105 from San Francisco on Thursday morning, February 4, 2016.
Bautista admitted that he had no idea the bag was lost as he had already gone home, but he was grateful that the guy who found it had readily returned it to him.
As for Duarte, he said that it did not cross his mind to steal the money in the bag because even if he is not rich, saying God provides for all his needs.
For his commendable actions and exemplary honesty, Duarte will be recommended to the MIAA Praise Board by NAIA Terminal 1 manager Dante Basanta.
