A Singapore-based British lawyer has gone out of her way to help her Filipina maid’s sick son.
Isabelle Claisse shaved off her hair in order to raise funds for the treatment of Dave Caba, the 10-year-old son of her helper of six years Mariza Canete. In October 2015, Dave was diagnosed with a potentially deadly type of bone cancer.
Since Dave has no health insurance, his estimated surgery and hospitalization costs run up to more than Php 4 million.
In order to reach this target, Claisse and her husband organized a Shave for Dave auction at Harry’s bar in Boat Quay. As of press time, the family has raised approximately Php 3 million.
“It is a good way to raise awareness about cancer, even though it would be challenging to be bald at my workplace in a corporate environment. Mariza is very important to us,” Claisse told Strait Times.
Prior to the auction, Claisse and her husband had earlier raised P306,000 on Generosity.com. The kindhearted lawyer is even willing to make a loan for them to reach the target amount.
“A lot of people will probably think I’m soft about it, but it feels like a moral imperative to me to do everything I can,” Claisse told Strait Times.
Canete, who is currently in Cebu to help her son recover, said that her employer had always treated her like a sister.
