VP Binay comes to Pacquiao’s defense

MANILA, Philippines. United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) standard bearer and Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay has defended Sarangani Rep. and senatorial bet Manny Pacquiao after the latter came under fire for his controversial remark about same-sex unions.

In the viral video of the Pinoy boxing icon’s interview with TV 5’s official election coverage program Bilang Pilipino, Pacquiao said that gay people are worse than animals.

Ngayon kung lalaki sa lalaki, babae sa babae, mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao,” Pacquiao said.

(Now if there is male to male and female to female, then man is worse than animals.)

His statement drew negative reactions from netizens particularly from prominent members of the LGBT community such as Kapamilya host and comedian Vice Ganda, singer/musician Aiza Seguerra, comedian John Lapus and even international blogger Perez Hilton. Veteran singer Lea Salonga also slammed the “Pambansang Kamao” for his statement in a Twitter post.

When asked to give his opinion about Pacquiao’s statement, VP Binay said, “Siguro mas maganda na hayaan ninyong magpaliwanag si Manny. Pero alam ninyo naman siguro maka-Diyos na tao yan ha.”

(Perhaps it’s better if we just let Manny explain. But you know that he is a religious person.)

Pacquiao is running for Senator in the upcoming national elections on Binay’s slate.

On Tuesday, February 16, Pacquiao issued an apology over his anti-LGBT comment through a video on his Facebook page.
