Netizen Andrew Pelayo has expressed his disappointment with a doctor at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) hospital for allegedly rejecting the admission of his wife who was in labor.
According to Pelayo, Dr. Ana Liezel Sahagun, an obstetrician-gynecologist, refused to admit his pregnant wife on Friday, February 19, despite her worsening condition. Pelayo’s wife was rushed to the hospital after experiencing bleeding and extreme pain in her stomach.
When Pelayo’s wife was brought to the hospital, doctors were able to confirm that the baby had a heartbeat and was still moving. However, after Dr. Sahagun learned that the couple didn’t have enough money to cover the hospital expenses, she reportedly suggested they transfer to a government hospital.
Dr. Sahagun apparently told Pelayo that he should have P20,000 on hand in order for his wife to be admitted at UST hospital. The doctor insisted that they will be able to make it since his wife’s birth canal had not opened yet.
“Hindi niyo talaga kakayanin dito sa UST,” she allegedly told Pelayo.
Compelled to sign a waiver he barely read, Pelayo immediately rushed his wife to Jose Reyes Hospital. Unfortunately, the said hospital didn’t have an incubator, forcing Pelayo to bring his wife back to the UST hospital.
Surprised that they came back, Dr Sahagun apparently told Pelayo to bring his wife to East Avenue hospital and stressed that they couldn’t afford the expenses in UST hospital. Once again, the doctor refused to give the medical treatment to Pelayo’s wife.
At East Avenue hospital, Pelayo’s wife was immediately brought to the operating room where they learned that the baby no longer had a heartbeat. Pelayo’s wife survived, but sadly, the baby was already dead.
One of the doctors even told Pelayo that his wife would have died if they didn’t make it in time.
“Para kay Dr. Ana Liezel Sahagun at sa dalawang kasama niyang doktor, kung inuna niyo sana na iligtas ang buhay ng mag-ina ko hindi sana nawala ang anak ko. Wala kayong awa mas inuna niyo pa ung PERA kaysa sa buhay na maiiligtas niyo. Ang pera pwedeng mahanap at pwedeng diskatehan pero ang BUHAY hindi niyo na maibabalik yan,” he wrote in his post.
(For Dr. Ana Liezel Sahagun and the two other doctors who were with you, if you had only prioritized saving my wife’s and my child’s lives, then my baby would have been alive. You didn’t show mercy and prioritized money before the life you could have saved. Money can be earned but you can’t bring back a life lost.)
