MANILA, Philippines. Shortly after being distributed to the public, the campaign comic book of former DILG chief Manuel “Mar” Roxas II became the center of controversy after earning the ire of netizens.
Titled Sa Gitna ng Unos, the comic book drew flak from netizens because it apparently depicts Roxas as a hero during the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Critics have alleged Roxas of attempting to twist facts and rewrite history.
Recently, netizens found another a loophole in the controversial comic book. Netizens have questioned why Roxas led typhoon victims to the basement of the Leyte Park Resort Hotel in Tacloban City. The idea of leading people below ground seemed stupid for many netizens as it could cost the lives of people in the storm surge situation.

In an article published in Fight for Mar, the unnamed author defended Roxas’s decision to take people to the basement. According to the author, Leyte Park Hotel is located on high ground and was not subjected to the storm surge. However, people in the facility still faced danger as the hotel apparently took on 200-300 kph winds.
“Since the danger came from above, where do people affected by such danger go to protect themselves? They go down, not up. Towards the basement, not the rooftop,” the article said.
The author insists that Roxas was right in ordering the people to the basement as it is a building on high ground.
