When Julie Jones, a 35-year-old mother from Liverpool in England, learned about the struggles of a 13-year-old Indian boy whose head hung at 180-degree angle, she decided to move mountains to change the boy’s life.
Mahendra Ahirwar suffered from congenital myopathy, a rare condition that weakened his neck muscles causing it to hang loosely and his head to drop. Because of his condition, Mahendra struggled to do everyday activities and was forced to stop going to school.
Although his family had visited 50 doctors to seek treatment for Mahendra, they all said they couldn’t help him, causing his parents to wish their son would die instead.
Seeing the poor boy’s tragic plight, Julie set up a crowd-funding account for Mahendra to finance his treatment. Luckily, they were able to raise £12,000 within 28 days of creating the account.
“While everyone was looking to help, no one was actually doing anything. So there and then, I got out my laptop, found a crowd-funding website and created an account,” Julie said.
Using the funds raised by Julie, Mahendra was able to undergo life-changing surgery that straightened his neck in Apollo Hospital in Delhi. After spending two weeks in the hospital, Mahendra was finally given the clearance to go home with a brighter future ahead of him.
Currently, Mahendra must wear a neck brace for six months and needs regular checkups with his doctors in Delhi.
“I had no hope of getting better in life but now I’m ok my dreams have risen up. I want to be successful in life now,” Mahendra said.
