MMDA proposes the inclusion of traffic education in high school curriculum

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is proposing the inclusion of traffic education in the high school curriculum.

Because of more than 500 total deaths in over 95,000 road accidents in the Philippine capital alone for 2015, MMDA chairman Emerson Carlos stated that traffic education should be a mandatory part of the curriculum for high school students aged 14 to 16.
Carlos said that this was not the first time that there was a proposal to incorporate of traffic education as part of the formal education. According to Carlos, the government tried to include traffic education in the grade school curriculum but it was not successful. Various private and government road safety groups also gave proposals to the Department of Education of two previous administrations which didn’t take any action on it.
The MMDA chairperson opened the MMDA-Institute of Traffic Management’s first Road Safety Forum on May 23 (Monday) and stated that proper traffic education will help curb the alarming number of deaths caused by road accidents not just locally but worldwide.

In a phone interview in GMA News TV’s Balitanghali, Carlos elaborated on the proposal and said many apprehended drivers for their traffic violations were “clueless” about traffic rules.

Doon kami nababahala talaga. Kung ito nang mga drivers na ito na mayroon nang mga lisensya (driver’s license) ay wala pa ring kaalam-alam sa traffic education, eh paano pa po yung mga walang lisensya. Kaya we deem it a wise proposal,” the MMDA chairman said.

The proposed traffic education program aims to educate and inform all Filipinos on traffic rules and to teach road safety principles.

Ang road safety does not only involve yung mga nagda-drive. It also involves commuters, passengers, and even pedestrians, dahil lahat po ng mga ito ay road users na nasa danger lagi ng road accidents. Sa traffic education, ang pinakamataas na hierarchy na laging pinagbibigyan ay pedestrians and that should be known by all road users including drivers; na mayroong priority lagi… ang pedestrians,” Carlos added.

In traffic education, the highest hierarchy who should always be prioritized are the pedestrians and that should be known by all road users including drivers; that the pedestrians are always a priority,” Carlos added.]

A proper traffic education is currently only taught in driving schools, CarlosĀ observed.
