MANILA, Philippines. President Rodrigo Duterte has revealed the names of five police generals allegedly protecting drug rings in the country on Tuesday, July 5, during his speech at the 69th anniversary of the Philippine Air Force (PAF).
Among them is former Philippine National Police (PNP) deputy director general Marcel Garbo, Jr., whom Duterte described as the “protector of drug syndicates”. Former National Capital Region Police Office chief Joel Pagdilao, former Quezon City Police District Office chief Edgardo Tinio, former Region 11 police chief Bernardo Diaz, and Daanbantayan, Cebu Mayor Vic Loot were among the police generals identified by the 71-year-old president.
Garbo and Loot are retired from police service. The tough-talking politician ordered those still active in service relieved of their posts.
Duterte said: “At this time, I order them relieved from their assignments and report to the director general who would like to talk to them but certainly I would expect the police commission to do their thing. Investigate niyo ito at wag niyo akong bigyan ng zarzuela. Hanapin ninyo ang totoo.”
According to Duterte, police officers linked to illegal drug trade have committed treason and stressed that their education was funded by taxpayers’ money.
“Ito yung mga tao who were given the honor to join the academies of our country, be it the PNP or PMA at the expense of the public and [made] a career there,” Duterte said.
Although he has raw information, Duterte said there is still an ongoing investigation on other government officials also allegedly involved in illegal drugs.
